In today's world information is money.  If you have an opportunity to acquire rights to something that is proprietary to your business then you should do it as soon as possible!

This may be something as simple as getting the .com for your business (and probably the .net and .org as well) and it might extend to something more involved like filing for a trademark.

A couple weeks ago our company, WebKit Inc., finally filed for a trademark on "WebKit".

Do you have a domain name that you may or may not want to keep for the future?  Make sure you pay your renewal fees.  If someone else grabs your intellectual property (legally) then it will cost you a lot more to get it back than it would have cost to do it right when you had a chance.

We have been using the name "WebKit" for over ten years.  Apple has been using it for a couple years now as the name of the engine that powers their Safari web browser.  We have no intent on challenging their use of it now that we have the trademark (and we wouldn't win, given their use prior to our filing) but it would have been smart for us to have done this years ago. 

Do you have a distinct brand?  Protect it!
